Grand Opening of the Blacks in Classics Museum, Alexandria, VA

This past Juneteenth we celebrated the grand opening of the Blacks in Classics Museum located in Alexandria, VA, a show curated by Dr. Anika Prather, Lecturer at Howard University. The show is dedicated to showcasing Black people throughout the world that have either contributed to the Western canon or are somehow connected to it via study of the Classics. When we think of Classics we think of works by Aristotle, Homer, and Plato, but there were so many Black people that have contributed to high works of culture and literature including Frederick Douglas, Terrence the Playwright , and Phyllis Wheatley, just to name a few. This ongoing project featuring my artwork will continue to expand in the coming years and will feature more contemporary Black figures, like James Baldwin and Barack Obama.

Here are some images of the grand opening:

Pink Carnation and Apples: 16″ x 16″ Cradled Wood

I received a pink carnation flower for Mother’s Day and decided to pair it with some green apples. I arrange my still life as if it were a landscape–with depth and movement.

Sunflowers: Oil on 8” x 8” panel

I painted this one a few months ago with acrylic. Today, I decided to go over some of the painting with oil. There are certainly more textures, and there is a bit more realism. I’m actually happy with the turnout. The combination of acrylic and oil allows me to take advantage of both mediums. Although I prefer oils, I sometimes paint my under-paintings with acrylic for faster drying time and better coverage.

I was able to find a frame for this one, so looking forward to this drying. Will also be making this available on my website soon!

I’ve actually decided to put some of my work for sale on my website with a payment option. Shipping is free in the United States. 😊

Alla Prima Raspberries and Bottle: Oil on 6″ x 6″ Canvas

I decided to work on some mini paintings while I work on larger projects. This was painted from life with some creative additions. 🙂

I love the idea of creating dynamic and expressive still life paintings. Still life does not have to be still or boring. I will continue to make these mini paintings exploring colors, textures, and light.

First Showers: Oil on 16″ x 16″ Canvas

Spring is just around the corner! 🙂 I know things are looking pretty scary out there with the virus going around! I hope and pray that everyone who is effected by this stays safe! I painted this a few weeks ago, but decided to post it to spread a little joy and hope in a time when there is a lot of negativity going around. Finding joy in the little things around us can keep us focused on what is truly important in life!

I decided to experiment with a palette knife, so lots of heavy textures and bold brush work. I tend work in a very refined and controlled manner, but for this piece, I decided to let go a little bit. This painting, as well as my other pieces will be displayed in a solo-exhibition in Savannah, GA in November! I will post more information about that soon.
