I wanted to post this painting I worked a few weeks ago for a show in Jacksonville, FL. This was my first time painting dead leaves from life. Fall is my favorite season and inspires me to create. I have been painting lately, but have taken on off from posting to work on a new series. I am also in school for Web Design and Graphic Design. So, about the new series I am working on–these paintings are a bit different that what I normally paint in that they are not focused on Realism, although they can still be considered representational. I have begun using the term “Tonal Expressionist” to symbolize my work. My new works are a bit more expressive, bold, and plays with colors and tones. The truth is, I paint in a variety of styles, but I train in Realism. I will be posting a sneak peak of some of my newer artwork soon, and some older works that showcase a variety of styles. 1 Hour Online Live Portrait Study

This was a 1 hour sketch done on 11″ x 14″ Toned Paper using Conte Crayons. I tried to use the tone of the paper as the mid-tone only using the white crayon for the lightest highlights. I have seeing some people blend the white and black for a grey mid-tone. I think this can cool the drawing too much, depending on the color of the paper. It is certainly not a perfect sketch, at least to my standards, but I know it has been a long time since I sketched a live portrait. I will be doing these frequently along with some figure drawings.

Charcoal on 11″ x 14″ paper

I enjoy experimenting with charcoal and creating interesting textures. I was not going to use the white chalk, as I think too much use of it can inadvertently cool the painting and destroy the delicateness of a drawing. I decided to go ahead and play with the white chalk anyway because there wasn’t enough contrast and variations in tones since I drew this on a lighter toned paper. I still prefer to draw on a medium-ranged toned paper. I decided to use my imagination for most of the landscape. The tree, however, is based on one I saw in a garden. I admired the strangely angled branches and the moss covering the leaves, as if it had a story to tell.

Peaches: Oil on 18″ x 18″ Cradled Wood Panel

I started this painting by toning with burnt sienna and ultra marine blue and sketching with my favorite angled brush from Michaels–It is the Level 2  Artist’s Loft Firenze Angle Brush in size 4. I will do a seperate review of soon. It is my go-to brush for sketching and making fine lines.

I wanted the focal point to be centered on the plate for this one.

I worked in two different sessions for this painting. I added some finishing touches and leaves to give it more movement and added some interesting textures with a palette knife.
