Bottles and Baskets: Demo- Oil on 12″ x 9″ Wood Panel

I decided to start a channel on YouTube for easier posting:

Here is a quick video demo of how I use my brush to sketch my painting on a pre-toned (ultra marine blue and red) wood panel with the size 4 Artist Loft Firenze level 2 angled brush from Michaels, which I mentioned on yesterday’s post:

After some work, I demonstrate how I apply the paint boldly and deliberately:

I have not worked in grisaille (black and white) for quite some time, so I decided to do this little practice for my upcoming workshop. Doing this reminds me of the importance of values. I tend to get lost in colors when I am working alla prima.  I will be doing more of these small studies this coming week.

Sunshine and Apples Study on 14″ x 11″ Panel

Most of my still-life paintings have been set up in my studio with artificial light. I decided to paint in natural light today. It makes a huge different in color perception and, of course, the objects appear much brighter. I am working on limiting blending and focusing on color and texture. I think it is a good idea to work in different types of lighting.

Eggplant Study with Oil

Eggplant Study: Oil on 10″ x 8″

When painting an object, regardless of what it is, I make it a goal  to transform something ordinary into something that alludes to something greater or meaningful. In the end, it should not matter what you paint, but how you paint it!
